his music is pretty shallow/contrived.
He constructed the "badass" image of the guitarist that
inspires so many young guitarists to play guitar for the sake of
guitar - which could be argued either way
Talentless? No. An artist? Hardly.

"shallow." The emotion he puts into his solos is pretty
incredible. I somewhat agree with your second point.. But you can
usually distinguish those guitarists who play just for the sake of
playing guitar versus those who try to be innovative. So I
wouldn't mind some more clarification as to why he's hated.
Maybe he's a douchebag? If he is, examples of when he displayed

always found his actual music to be horribly generic. Maybe I'm

someone else would be berating him for having no stage presence and

in Slash's persona. I can hardly fault the guy for sticking to
his guns (get it?) and not trying to reinvent himself for the sake of
reinvention.

Of course there is. I appreciate the hell out of a nice steak, but
I'll be damned if I don't love greasy, shitty Chinese food
too. They fill completely different niches, and I don't see why
that's so strange.

Nobody in their right mind is pretending that Slash is some sort of
virtuoso, or that he's anything near sophisticated. I was just
saying that criticizing him for his stage presence is ridiculous
(besides, he was probably had a few kilos of coke in his system during
that performance).

Nobody in their right mind is pretending that Slash is some sort of
virtuoso, or that he's anything near sophisticated

Slash's virtuosity is something else entirely that I'm not
arguing one way or the other. It isn't a matter of ability,
it's a matter of taste, which Slash lacks. I, as a fan of
"indie music", for lack of a better word, have tons of
respect for guitarists who aren't considered great musicians. Take
something like Franz Ferdinand, great, memorable licks that don't
saturate the music. Their music speaks for itself and doesn't
cling to an already established aesthetic aside from "rock"
and "new wave"

I'm one of those naive, hopeful music lovers who believes that
music has a purpose beyond the glorification of the individual.
Slash's trademark glasses, cigarette and badass attitude just come
off as weakness and a lack of substance that he's trying to make
up for.

I disagree with his musical ideology and hate to draw any attention to
it, unless it's to inspire someone else to do the same, though I
doubt that I will be successful in this case.

But here's me going out on a limb, did you like GNR/was GNR
present a lot when you were younger?

permalinkparent[+]Cheese-Its_Christ 4 points5 points6 points 2
months ago  (0 children)[–]Cheese-Its_Christ 4
points5 points6 points 2 months agoI'm a huge indie fan
too -- shit, a good majority of my favorite artists would be labeled
"indie" -- but I think the difference lies in the fact that
I am seeing Slash in a historical context. He is a product of his
early career, a time period that was filled with over-the-top
theatrics by just about all of his peers. At the time they were just
about the "truest" rock band to hit the mainstream. They
NEEDED that edgy persona to set themselves apart from the Wingers and
Scorpions of the era. They carried that act throughout their careers,
which I have nothing but respect for -- but I can see how people would
see that as a negative. What you see as a weakness I see as an
admirable steadfastness; but again, agree to disagree.

Their music speaks for itself and doesn't cling to an already
established aesthetic aside from "rock" and "new
wave"

I challenge you to examine this statement and what it means. What
exactly does GNR cling to if not exclusively "rock"? Just
because their music is more guitar-oriented, that somehow makes it
less tasteful? It's almost as if taste is subjective or
something.

But here's me going out on a limb, did you like GNR/was GNR
present a lot when you were younger?

I enjoyed GNR as a teenager/new guitarist, but to no greater extent
than any other band.

Hes made some pretty great songs but in comparison to other guitarists

actual musical ability. And thats why many guitarists dislike him. I
agree that his music is shallow, but thats half the reason allot of

hate one member of Guns N' Roses, and that is Axl, the person that
single-handedly turned a good band into a shit band after one album.

was that one kick ass fucking album.

and didn't suck

any jimmies with my comment. Just my honest opinion. The Revolver
stuff doesn't really do it for me, nor did the Illusion piano rock
phase that Axle steered them into after they blew up. Doesn't take
anything away from Appetite though. I'll stand by my statement,
one of the best rock albums, ever.

Reason I love them Les Pauls and Marshalls! :) (Next to Clapton and
Page of course...)

fun of a lot for it, but he's been my absolute favorite guitarist
for as long as I've been playing. Very melodic and tasteful, but
when the energy of the songs calls for some fast playing, he
doesn't shy away from it.

I just saw him in PDX on July 12th with Myles Kennedy and it was
fan-fucking-tastic. A true rock 'n' roll show. I'm
honestly not sure why people hate on the man so much...
